It’s all about the weather, ’bout the weather, no moving…part 1

So it’s been a long time since I’ve posted. It’s been so long that I had to go back and read my last post just to figure out when I did it…😖. Anyways, a lot has happened since March 18th (it’s now April 21st) so grab a seat and start reading.

We left Church Creek with a beautiful sunrise and about 45 miles of travel planned. Our goal for the day was to get past Charleston SC and anchor in a small creek called Graham Creek. We had two bridges to go thru, current to deal with, and the most shallow water for the entire trip back to CT. We made our way to Elliott Cut, which is famous for having current so strong that you could be at full throttle with your boat and still be going just a couple miles an hour, and timed our passage thru it just about perfect!! We had to slow just a few minutes to wait for the bridge just past it to open and let us thru so we didn’t lose much time getting to Charleston harbor.

We had a great ride across Charleston Harbor as we didn’t see any big container ships or lots of traffic. Once we were across, we entered back into the ICW and headed for our next bridge, the Ben Sawyer bridge. So the thing you have to do with any bridges you need to open to get thru is to call them on the radio as you’re getting close and request an opening. Most times, it’s fairly quick but other times, not so much. This time it was not so much…😞. The bridgemaster was nice and said he saw us coming and would have the bridge open when we got there. As we approached, it was apparent that something had happened on the highway and a lot of traffic was still on the bridge. The guy called us and said it was going to take awhile for it to clear and he’d call us when he’s was going to open it. The other thing about waiting at bridges is most times there’s a current and you just can’t sit there, you have to be constantly making circles (or ovals) so you don’t hit the shore or the bridge (or other boats that are waiting). We circled for about a half hour before the bridge finally opened…ugh.

Once we were past the bridge, we came to the shallowest party of the entire trip. This is the part of the ICW that passes behind the Isle of Palms area in SC. Thank you Active Captain for updating your charts as it would have been a lot harder to go thru without getting stuck. There were times where we had about 2′ of water under Infinity’s keel…yikes!!

We did get past it though and set our sights on getting to the anchorage for the night. It was still a few hours away and we were ready to get the anchor down and have some supper and sleep!! We finally arrived at Graham Creek, dropped the hook, and settled in for a very peaceful night. Denise found it to be spooky cos there’s nothing there but marsh grass, trees, and water. It was so dark you couldn’t see the shore even though it was just a hundred feet away.

The next morning we got up to another beautiful sunrise and we were pretty excited that our destination for the day was going to be Georgetown SC for a two night stay. For the most part, it was a very uneventful day of motoring thru endless marsh grass lined creeks and rivers. We did go past the spot where Pegu Club started having the engine issues so we had a moment of silence as we went by…rest in peace Big Red…and then turned up Winyah Bay towards Georgetown.

Next up… Georgetown and beyond!!

I promise I’ll get another post out shortly too…

❤️❤️❤️
