Port Jefferson and the Culper Spy Ring

Our first destination was Port Jefferson NY on the northside of Long Island. We came into port just as the sun was starting to sink below the horizon so we all watched to see if the infamous “green flash” that people report seeing was was going to reveal itself. Nope….but it was a very pretty sunset nonetheless!!

After the anchor was firmly set and the boat was in order, the celebratory sundowners were happily enjoyed as it had been a very long, hot day. The next day was to be a rest day so plans were made to go to shore in Setauket to see the town made famous by the Culper Spy Ring, George Washington’s secret group that spied on the British during the Revolutionary War. The leader of the group, Benjamin Tallmadge, is loosely related to my family so the history is of great interest to me.

We took a guided phone tour through the town to quite a few of the historical sites including the town common, the Presbyterian Church, the cemetery where Abraham Woodhull is buried, and the Caleb Brewster house. It was cool to see everything but it was sooooo hot!!

Once we finished the tour, we dinghied over to Port Jefferson to see if we could find a good place to rest that also had A/C. Well, we did!!

Nothing better than a brewery with A/C!!

After cooling down and quenching our thirsts with some fine Port Jefferson Brewery products, we headed back to the boat to get a good night’s rest before heading out to Port Washington the next day.

Next up….Port Washington!!
